q: What is pornography addiction and where can I find
out more about it?
a: Pornograhy can be defined as any image or movie that
we "use" to commit sexual sin. Pornography addiction is a
growing problem in our society. With Internet pornography available
to anyone anytime; porn addiction has reached epidemic proportions even
among Christians! As a matter of fact, a survey of some 2500 pastors
revealed that a large percentage confessed to looking at Intenet porn
even on their church office computers!
q: Can you help me with other addictions such as alcoholism
and drug addiction?
a: Absolutely. Addiction is addiction. It doesn't matter
what the addiction, the behavior started at a point in time. Left to
itself, the addictive behavior will continue until it becomes "unmanageable".
Once some loses a job or a spouse because of their addictive behavior,
their eyes can become open to the problem and they can get help. The
first step in recovery is to admit that you have a problem. Once that's
out of the way, the possibility of recovery is very real. That being
said, if we rely on our own strength to "stay clean" we will
fail every time. It is only through the power of Our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ that we will be victorious over addiction.
q: Can you recommend any good books on addiction?
a: Yes. Brent has written a combination autobiography/recovery
manual on addiction. The book is entitled "No More Hiding, No More
Shame: Freedom from Pornography Addiction". Purchase
book here
I would also recommend "Addiction and Grace"
by Gerald G. May, M.D.; "The Road to Grace" by Mike Genung;
"The Enemy Within" by Kris Lundgaard; and a pamphlet called
"Just One More" by Edward T. Welch.
At our Christian 12 Step Recovery meetings we have used
the "Life Recovery Bible" which features the New LIving Translation
of the Bible along with some very helpful notes that are geared toward
addiction recovery.
q: How can I find a Christian 12 Step program near me?
a: Go to www.celebraterecovery.com
or www.addvicinc.org
.Meetings for all states are listed on these sites.
q: My spouse is addicted to pornography? What can I do?
I'm hurt and I feel like I've been cheated on.
a: This is a serious problem. Pornography addiction doesn't
just hurt the addict. Spouse's of porn addicts, as well as the entire
family, are hurt as well. Many marriages never recover and end in divorce.
If you're in a marriage and your spouse is a porn addict, you need to
get help for yourself--not just for your spouse. You have been hurt.
You are suffering from a lack of love and intimacy. First of all, God
knows and He cares about what is happening to you. He can heal your
broken heart. He can heal your broken marriage but you are going to
need support. I would highly recommend a Celebrate Recovery support
group. I would also recommend that you see a Christian Family Therapist
or Counselor in your area.
